Cleon’s background lies in moving image and experimental sound. His lack of traditional art training provides a unique perspective as well as making him feel camouflaged in the realm of fine art. In his work, he fuses these disciplines with traditional artistic practices, forming distinct, multi-layered compositions. A triangle of sound, video, and painting is the best way to imagine his creative process. This is evident in his application of dynamic shapes and letters, a manifestation of his sensory reaction to intuitive music. Furthermore, form is a key element, he plays with rectangular canvases, piecing three works together like a puzzle to make a large rectangular form. Cleon is drawn to these shapes, mimicking a screen and referencing cinematic imagery. He continues his work in film and music alongside fine art, always carrying a camcorder, allowing him to record transient shapes and patterns like shadows and graffiti and integrate them into his art.
Experimentation is a key theme, carried out in many mediums: paint, tape, glue, concrete, ceramic and photography. This fusion of media evokes intriguing contrasts, drawing the viewer to the tactile and layered nature of his piece. In this exhibition he ventures into different techniques, using glue to add dimensionality and tape to reveal traces of the layers. Letters appear as a recurring motif throughout his body of work, he dismantles his name to create patterns on bright backgrounds.
